480i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p what does it all mean?
Standard TV from the days of black and white to the present color images we watch every day on television are made up of a series of still images displayed at 60 frames a second in the US and 50 frames a second in Europe. These still images consist of individual lines of information that move from left to right across the screen followed by more lines moving down the screen. With a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) that most older TVs’ use for the display, the flat surface that you look at is coated on the inside with phosphor dots or rectangles. A beam of electrons is aimed at the dots or rectangles causing them to glow. With a standard definition TV there are 480 of these lines and 640 sets of dots or rectangles on each line. Each set of dots or rectangles consist of three color dots (Red Blue and Green) and the power or intensity of the electron beam determines how bright each color will be. There are actually three beams moving together across the face of the screen, each changing in intensity as they cross the phosphor dots or rectangles.
Interlaced (i) or Progressive (p)?
Until not to long ago, ambient light was the main argument you had in choosing LCD over plasma. With today’s models, though it remains a factor that helps you decide which technology to choose, it is not as decisive as it was before. The light can affect the picture quality in two ways.
First of all, if the screen material is highly reflective a lot of light will bounce from it. In a real life scenario this happens in a sunny day when a lot of sunlight enters the window and hits the screen from an angle that makes it reflect directly into your eyes. In this situation the screen acts as a mirror and instead of seeing what it is displayed on the screen you see that annoying light that reflects from it. This happens because the amount of sunlight that hits the screen and bounces from it is much higher than the amount of light the screen produces. Depending on how reflective the screen is and the angle from which the sunlight comes, this effect can be more or less disturbing. Same effect appears from other powerful light sources - like your light bulbs - but it is less disturbing. In most cases the light from light bulbs is very weak compared to sunlight so this effect is either invisible or almost unnoticeable.
Spain’s DVD Region
Spain belongs to Region 2 and its DVD players are coded for Region 2 only. Hence, these players are able to play only Region 2 coded DVDs. They are unable to play DVDs that are coded for Regions 1, 3, 4, 5, or 6. To overcome this limitation, the regionfree or codefree DVD players are used. A regionfree DVD player is one that is able to play DVDs from any part of the world, belonging to any of the Regions, 1 to 6. The players are designed in such a manner that they are able to switch to the relevant code for the DVD being played. Certain other DVD players are provided with a chip set that enables them to read DVDs from other regions.
PAL and NTSC Standards in Spain
